Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent and she was accepted into a school specifically designed for kids with a flair to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. It was here that she got to know her coach Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, when she finished second at her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Since then, her grace and beauty have captivated the interest of all. Olympic success Katarina Wit won gold in women's ice skating during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. After four years, the event, she was able to take home an even tighter race. The free skate she took was not a success, however her gold medal resulted from the performances she made at both mandatory figures (short programme) and mandatory figures. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie who was a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd despite not winning a medal. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
